Abstract: Results of the research showed occurence of bulking of activated sludge at wastewater treatment plants. It was initi- ated by filamentous sulfur bacteria Thiothrix nivea and Eikelboom type 0961. Optimal conditions for bulking suppression and activated sludge quality regeneration were selected experimentally. They include unit sewage load decrease to the pro- 66 portion of activated sludge and wastewater by volume as 3 to 1 (in small-scale) or 2 to 1 (in large-scale experiments); and oxygen concentration increase in sludge mixture to 5,5…7,7 mg/dm3. Filamentous bacteria disappeared from activated sludge by 6–17th day of laboratory experiment. Recovery of activated sludge and its flocculated structure took 14–17 days. Species diversity increased from 4–7 to 16–20. Based on the original laboratory equipment used in experiments, a modi- fied useful model was created and later on patented. It can be used for scientific and practical purpose. The technique al- lowing bulking activated sludge regeneration was later applied into industrial process and proved efficient. The research gives economical and ecological benefit.
