Abstract: In our investigations the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in human larynx carcinoma cells HEp-2 was observed. Mitochondria were established to be the main source of ROS in HEp-2 cells. ROS formation was caused by the forward electron transport in complex I. Supplement of physiological concentrations of ascorbic acid (AA) changed the direction of electron transfer in complex I of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. In presence of AA at physiological concentrations a decrease in ascorbate- and antimycin-induced ROS generation was also observed
