Abstract

Historical approaches to the problem of linearity of the Belarusian language development are discussed in the article. In the introductory part, the importance of filiation research is showed, the results of which depend on the resolution of Фiлолагi-славiсты ХIХ ст. пра характар пiсьмовай традыцыi ў гiсторыi беларускай мовы linguistic-historical and social issues. Various assessments of the character of continuity between the old Belarusian and the new Belarusian literary language that exist in modern linguistics are briefly presented and the dynamic of views on this issue is discussed. The main part presents the reflections of Slavic philologists of the 19th century, directly or indirectly related to the study of the written tradition of the Belarusian language. These opinions are combined into four groups, according to their main ideas, each of which is described and qualified. It is concluded that in the 19th century, when recognition of a separate Belarusian language became relevant, the filiation problem relating to it had not yet been comprehended and formulated. The dynamic of the described opinions (from the recognition of the existence of Belarusian writing in antiquity to the realization of the need to improve it in the present) shows the preconditions for the formation of the problem of interruption in the written tradition of the Belarusian language.
