Abstract: The article touches upon general issues of the course of photochemical reactions in biological systems and the mechanisms of such reactions during laser photodynamic therapy in dentistry. The properties and role of singlet oxygen, features of the response to photodynamic effects of gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms, the spectrum and stages of the emergence of modern photosensitizers, and their disadvantages are reflected. On the basis of the information provided, as a conclusion, the main directions of the development of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy are formulated today.
