Abstract: The article focuses on the problem of the protection of personal data on social media. Data is one of the most important sources nowadays. The knowledge of how to manage information makes it possible to control people and influence their choices. There are many scandals nowadays involving the violation of the protection of personal data. In addition, leaks of data are now possible even from seemingly reliable web sites. Therefore, the developing of media law and drafting privacy protecting laws are important in order to provide secure usage of the Internet. The main issues addressed in the article are the notions of privacy, personal data and sensitive personal data; the legal regulation of the protection of privacy on social media including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR); the means of ensuring the protection of privacy; the factors which interfere with the protection of privacy in social networks.
