The article focuses on sentences with negation in English media discourse, their pragmatic/stylistic functions (such as attention focusing, persuasion and urging to act), as well as relevant ways to translate such sentences into the Russian language. The analysis shows that the reader’s attention can be focused on the subject-matter of an article by means of such stylistic devices as antitheses and repetitions; persuasion is achieved through the use of litotes and rhetorical questions; imperative sentences help to urge – or advise – the listener to do (or not to do) something. The analysis also highlights that the most common strategies to translate English negative sentences into Russian are antonymic translation, transferred negation, compensation and logical developmentru
