Abstract: The cultural-historical theory developed by L.S. Vygotsky is the theoretical and methodological basis of special psychology. The psychology of handicapped children was seen by Vygotsky as an indispensable aspect of the general theory of human development. In order to reveal this affirmation the author comprehends the main concepts of Vygotsky’s theory and tells about perspectives of the psychological work with handicapped children according to this concept. The anomalous course of handicapped development requires modified education methods but the goal of the development should be the same as for a normal child. The author emphasizes that an important concept for the theory of handicapped development and for the practice of special psychology is that of zone of proximal development, in which the encounter between child’s and adult’s behaviour and thinking takes place.
