Abstract: The oxidation of native and mercerized cellulose by solutions with different concentrations of nitrogen(IV) oxide in CCI4 was studied. The reactivity of mercerized cellulose in oxidation process was shown to be higher than that of native cellulose. The action of dilute (10 and 15 %) solutions of N2O4 doesn't affect the degree of crystallinity of cellulose samples. The oxidation in this conditions proceeds exclusively in amorphous regions and on the surface of crystallites. The oxidation of cellulose in concentrated (40 %) solution leads to destruction of crystallites of cellulose, increase in surface area and swelling in water. Physicochemical and acidic properties of oxidized cellulose were investigated.
