| Abstract: | В статье описываются научные достижения Софьи Ковалевской в области математики и физики. Она была первой женщиной в современной Европе, получившей докторскую степень по математике, первая вступила в редакцию научного журнала и первая была назначена профессором математики. Ковалевская также заслужила репутацию писателя, защитника прав женщин. Она сочинила романы, пьесы и эссе, в том числе автобиографические «Воспоминания о детстве» (1890) и «Нигилистская женщина» (1892), где описана ее жизнь в России. Кроме того, ее новаторская работа по математике заставила ее коллег-мужчин пересмотреть свои архаичные представления о неполноценности женщин в глазах мужчин на таких научных аренах. |
| Abstract (in another language): | The article describes scientific work of Sofia Kovalevskaya in area of mathematics and physics. She was the first woman in modern Europe to gain a doctorate in mathematics, the first to join the editorial board of a scientific journal, and the first to be appointed professor of mathematics. Kovalevskaya also gained a reputation as a writer, an advocate of women’s rights, and a champion of radical political causes. She composed novels, plays, and essays, including the autobiographical «Memories of Childhood» (1890) and «The Nihilist Woman» (1892), were is her life in Russia. In addition, her ground-breaking work in mathematics made her male counterparts reconsider their archaic notions of women’s inferiority to men in such scientific arenas |
