Abstract: Thermal Z/E-isomerization of azomethine derivatives of antracene in thin films of poly(methyl­ methacrylate) is studied. Enhancing of electron donating property of nitrogen-connected substituent leads to an inhibition of the reaction due to rotation mechanism predomination over inversion one. A rate of Z/E -isomerization becomes comparable with a rate of free volume diffusion from surface of the film making the molecular rearrangement highly sensitive to a relaxation of the polymer matrix.
