Abstract: Lake water resources of the European part of Russia (ER) amount to 1370 km3 of water, of which 91 % are in the large lakes. The bulk of the water in large lakes maintains a high quality for the most part of the area. Thus we can conclude that significant reserves of lake waters in ER characterized as approximately clean. At the same time, the ecological state of many small and medium-sized lakes are unfavorable. In recent decades reduced water quality has been observed in the northeast of ER. For the central and southern regions of ER the area reduction of the number of lakes is recorded for half a century
