The different influence of Internet use on social activities among Chinese men and women

Abstract

Based on data from Chinese General Social Survey, this study uses the entropy weighting method to comprehensively and objectively evaluate the social activity levels of Chinese men and women. Furthermore, this study uses least squares regression and quantile regression models to explore the different influence of Internet use on the social activity levels of Chinese men and women. The results show that, overall, Internet use has a stronger positive effect on the social activity levels of Chinese men than Chinese women. Furthermore, as social activity levels increase, the positive effect of Internet use on Chinese men decreases, while the positive effect on Chinese women increases. However, the positive effect of Internet use on the social activity levels of Chinese women at lower levels is not statistically significant
