Thermal decomposition behavior of sodium salt of 5-aminotetrazole (SAT) was studied by high-resolution thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry and thermal volatilisation analysis. SAT decomposes in three steps at 280-300, 300-330 and 420-520°C respectively. In the first step, the tetrazole ring cracks with evolution either sodium azide or hydrogen azide. SAT produced a thermally stable residue consisting of sodium salts of cyanomelamine and trisodium salt of tricyanomelamine.ru
