Abstract: Comparison of the nucleotide sequence flanking the site of transposon insertions with existing nucleotide databases has revealed very high homology of the gene inactivated in P. agglomerans 1 ' to crtY (coding for lycopene cyclase) of Pantoea agglomerans pv. milletiae, as well as gene inactivated in P. agglomerans 3ESm/Cm is homological to crtZ (coding for ß-carotene hydroxylase) of Pantoea agglomerans pv. milletiae. We have verified (by means of HPLC chromatography) that the end product of carotenoid biosynthesis accumulating in the crtY mutant of P. agglomerans is indeed lycopene and the end product accumulating in the crtZ mutant is indeed ß-carotene
