Abstract

The purpose of the study was to investigate the main biochemical markers of thyroid follicular cells (cytoskeletal and contractile proteins, Cu/Zn- and Mn-superoxide dismutases, thyroid peroxidase, catalase, GSH-reductase, thyroglobulin) in the histologically classified thyroid glands from patients with benign adenoma, papillary carcinoma and in normal tissue. The role of the human thyroid peroxidase in xenobiochemistry and chemical injury of the thyroid was also examined. Based on the results of the study proposed mechanisms of thyroid carcinogenesis, the biochemi­ cal abnormalities of thyroid tumors and their diagnostic value are discussed.
