dc.description | Секция 2.

dc.title.alternative | From wealth to beauty: frogs in Chinese and Japanese traditions / A. R. Sadokova
dc.type | conference paper
dc.description.alternative | This article is dedicated to how a traditional Chinese symbol of wealth and prosperity has been borrowed and adapted into Japanese tradition. Some point out that the frog already had an established role in Japan as a water god, a guardian. When this traditional image came to merge with the symbolism that the Chinese had placed on the frog, a new symbol was born, one of wealth and beauty. The goal here is to delimit the cultural space that this symbol inhabits in Japan, to identify the variations with which this imagery is popularly perceived and represented in poetic literature. This is the first study to offer a comparison of the Chinese and Japanese cultural images of the frog at the popular or folk level. Research of cultural borrowings such as this lays a foundation upon which a broader understanding of the processes of regional cultural interaction and national cultural adaptation as a deeply engrained cultural phenomenon can be built
