Abstract: A general mathematical model and computational method is proposed for studying the influence of the particle diffusion on equilibrium shapes of a magnetic liquid. It is applied on the ferrohydrostatic problem of equilibrium shapes of a magnetic liquid in a cylindrical cavity subject to a magnetic field created by a cylindrical permanent magnet located below the cavity. Numerical simulations show that the usual assumption of a uniform concentration field does not apply in the case of high-gradient magnetic fields
